He sits down, clicks the mic on, and does the job — professional, warm, the voice people fell asleep to for years. But as the night deepens and the hours empty out, the DJ voice cracks. The professional patter gives way to something real. He starts saying the things he never said — to the listeners who left, to the caller who might still be out there, to the version of someone he needs to hear him.
